Best B+B in Key West, Florida || Amsterdam's Curry Mansion Inn
In January, our big trip was to Key West, Florida. It was the first time either of these Florida girls had seen the Southernmost point of the continental U.S.
Pretty wild, y’all!
We’re going to give you a comprehensive guide to Key West in the coming weeks, but first we want to nail down the most important thing… where should you stay?
Key West has SO MANY B+Bs and hotels. The possibilities are virtually endless and extremely overwhelming. We chose one of the oldest homes in the area, the Curry Mansion Inn. It was beautiful, homey, and so incredible we didn’t want to leave. Check out our video on the property before we dive in…
THE HISTORY
If you visit the Amsterdam’s Curry Mansion Inn website, you’ll find fascinating stories from the B+B’s past. It’s a quick read and we highly recommend it. But we’ll give you the abridged version.
In 1869 William Curry built his home in Key West. He worked in shipwrecking, which was what made Key West one of the richest cities in the U.S. back in the day. Coincidently, that same trade made William Curry the first self-made millionaire in the state of Florida. You’ll find that many of the most historic homes in Key West were from the Curry family.
In 1901 William’s son, Milton, purchased the home, demolished it, and built what we see today on the property. The home stayed in the Curry family until 1920 when it changed hands. It would go through two other families, who let the home fall from its original glory. Then, in 1973, the Amsterdam’s took possession and restored the gorgeous Georgian Revival mansion to its current state.
The intention was for the Amsterdam’s to use the mansion as their private residence, but unfortunately because of taxes and other financial strains of the rebuild, they had to reconsider. Thus, Amsterdam’s Curry Mansion Inn was born in 1988. It has been a staple of Key West ever since.
THE ROOMS
The mansion has a total of 28 room across three different buildings. First, is the main house (pictured below). The first floor of the main house is where you’ll find the bulk of the mansion’s history. You can sign the guestbook found in the foyer and then walk through the formal dining room, parlor, music room, and library. You can also ‘ooh and ahh’ over the three gorgeous fireplaces (we sure did!).
The kitchen and check-in desk are also on the first floor. At the desk you’ll find brochures for various Key West activities, and some lovely ladies ready to take you to your room or answer any questions you have. The kitchen is right next door to the check-in and there are snacks throughout the day and hot breakfast items in the morning.
On the second floor of the main house there are two Master Suites intended for couples celebrating special occasions (i.e. honeymoon), a King balcony room overlooking the pool, a Queen room, and the private residence of Phil and Nancy Amsterdam (the innkeepers).
You can also snoop around the attic where you’ll find lots of fun treasures like old toys and clothes. This is also where you’ll find the pathway to the Widow’s Walk, which has the most spectacular view of Key West.
Just outside of the main house, you’ll find the two-story guest wing, which has sixteen tropical guest rooms. This is where we stayed while on our Key West adventure. All of the rooms overlook the pool, but come in various styles (King Balcony, small Queen, Deluxe King and Queen).
The third building is actually across the street from the main house and guest wing. It’s called the James House. It has a total of eight rooms and they’re all either King Rooms or Suites. The James House is really designed for larger groups or families traveling to Key West.
THE AMENITIES
Before we get into the normal amenities, we want to point out the best amenity by far, which is the resident cat, Rusty. We had such a good time petting him and even hung out on our last night (watch the video to find out why).
Since the Curry Mansion is a bed and breakfast, you can expect a delicious meal to start your day. It’s served buffet style outside by the pool and in the kitchen.
Outside you’ll find pastries, cereal, and your basic cold breakfast items along with orange juice, coffee, etc. Just inside the kitchen there are a few hot items like bacon, ham, and hash browns. You can also fill out an order form for eggs (omelet, scrambled, etc.) and they’ll call your name when it’s finished. It really is a delicious breakfast!
Each night they also have an open bar cocktail hour (but actually two hours) with snacks and entertainment. It’s a great time to hang out and relax by the pool.
All of the rooms at the mansion have air conditioning, a mini fridge, private bathroom, a telephone, cable TV, and an ironing board. All guests also have access to laundry facilities, parking, and free WiFi.
One thing to note is that check out is at 11am, but that just means you need to vacate your room. The mansion gives you access to luggage storage, parking, and the property all day when you check out.
THE LOCATION
The Curry Mansion Inn is located in the heart of old Key West. It’s a few steps from DuVall Street, which is basically where all of the action happens. We’d say everything is pretty much walking distance. If you’re not a big fan of walking or you want to get to the newer part of Key West, then you can walk about three minutes to Mallory Square, buy a ticket for the trolley, and it’ll take you wherever you want to go.
We rode the trolley and the tourist train just for sightseeing purposes, but we found that everything was more than walkable. Just wear comfy shoes!
FINAL THOUGHTS
We know it’s cliché, but this place was a true home-away-from-home. We felt so cared for and loved by everyone on the property. The food was yummy, the accommodations were gorgeous, beds were comfortable, and we’ve never experienced such beautiful hospitality.
Amsterdam’s Curry Mansion Inn is easily the best B+B in Key West AND the best B+B we’ve ever stayed in. We didn’t want to leave, and we can’t wait to go back.
If you want to book your own stay at the Curry Mansion Inn, visit their website and start planning that Key West vacation. Don’t forget to tell them that Joanie and Jenni B. sent you!
A very special thank you to Phil and Nancy and everyone at the Curry Mansion Inn for allowing us to stay with you! It was truly a pleasure.
