How to Save Money on Food When Traveling (and still have a delicious time)

If you like to travel then you know that good food can be one of your biggest expenses. If you’re looking for ways to cut back on that expense without tainting your trip, then we have a few tips we think will do the trick.

Set A Reasonable Spending Limit

We know it can be difficult, but sometimes the best option is to set a reasonable spending limit before your trip even starts. Know what you want to spend on each meal and, whenever possible, stick to that figure. This requires some upfront research, because you need to be able to set a reasonable limit for your budget and for the place you’re visiting. A limit of $100 per day will be different for New York City than it is for Crete, Greece or Sautee, Georgia.

Don’t forget that when you’re traveling you are always going to have those bucket-list ideas, or restaurants that you just have to try at least once. If you have anything like this in mind then be sure to check it off, and add that into your budget. This way you’re keeping track of your spending without sacrificing your overall experience.

Take Food With You And Cook Some Meals

If you’re not afraid to spend some time in the kitchen, bring food with you or shop at your destination for things you can cook in your hotel, B&B, or rental. The options here are endless (and often more affordable). You can keep it simple with something like Stouffers Mac and Cheese or, if you want something a bit healthier and heartier, Broth Masters can provide a great base (or even a whole meal).

This can be an amazing option if you’re not into trying the local cuisine or if you’d rather spend the bulk of your money on other experiences.

Share Meals When Possible

If you’re traveling with a group of close family or friends, sharing meals may be a great option for you. When we traveled to Greece in 2021, we loved sharing our meals. Our motives were more about trying more things versus saving money, but if you’re looking to cut back on extra expenses, it can still be a great option.

Enjoy Every Moment

We understand that money is tight, and we also understand that travel is such a valuable experience and want everyone to have the chance to do it as often as possible. While these tips may not save you thousands, they are a way to watch the pennies and let the dollars take care of themselves.

At the end of the day, enjoy every moment of your trip no matter where you go, what you do, or what you eat. These are memories and moments that will last a lifetime.
