Your Ultimate Travel Guide to Fairfield, Illinois
First things first, like always this blog post has a companion video. Check it out before you dive in.
When you visit Fairfield, there are a few things you need to think about: (1) Where to Stay, (2) What to Do, and (3) Where to Eat. We have you covered on all accounts!
WHERE TO STAY
When you arrive in Fairfield, there’s no doubt you’ll see the best B+B around. It’s a mainstay in the town, built in 1895 by Judge Jacob R. Creighton and his wife Lucretia.
After going through many lives, it became the beautiful Victorian on Main.
We have a blog post dedicated to this beauty, so if you want to know more about the history and the inn itself just click here. We’ll just give you the lowdown about the rooms we stayed in.
First is the Garden Suite. It’s a massive room with a king size bed, bathroom, porch, and beautiful antiques. It has the comfiest sheets and mattress!
Just like the rest of the rooms, the Garden Suite has an HDTV and high speed wifi.
Our second room is the quirkiest one in the house… the Squirrel’s Nest. Just like the Garden Suite, it’s massive. It has a living area with a comfy couch, chair and HDTV. There’s also a nice desk that faces the window, making it a great workspace.
Since it’s in what would have been an attic-like space, the roof was problematic during renovation. They knew where they wanted to put the bed, but just couldn’t figure out how to make it all work. That’s when one of the super stars working on the project came up with a brilliant idea that became the centerpiece of the entire room.
It’s a wooden tent, built to fit the structure of the roof, and the bed is just nestled inside. It’s so cozy and the most incredible thing we’ve ever seen!
The B&B uses amazing STEAM products for the bathroom, which we found heavenly. And, just in case you’re a tall person like Scott (one of the owners), he’s got you covered. All of the rooms have stools you can sit on while you’re at the sink. No more neck straining.
WHAT TO DO
Fairfield is gorgeous just to walk around and explore. However there are two shops we definitely think you need to wander into!
First is Carnaby Square. In here you’ll find lots of boutique style clothes that you won’t find anywhere else in the area. They also carry Brighton jewelry and bags, which are absolutely stunning! While we were in Kristi’s shop, she helped us put together a Brighton Amulet Collection necklace to commemorate our passion for travel. We love them!
If you’re looking for some great makeup and skincare, then pop into the Gray Area Boutique. The owner, Misty, keeps it stocked with adorable clothes and accessories, but what makes it really unique are the Merle Norman Cosmetics AND the fact that you can get your makeup and hair done in the shop. Pretty cool, right?
WHERE TO EAT
The number one place you have to stop into for a bite is Jovalou. It’s decorated to perfection. The food is top-notch chef quality. The menu is constantly changing, but make sure you get a burger. They are some of the best we’ve ever tried!
If you’re in the mood for some pizza, Classic is the place for you! It’s got that down-home pizza shop vibe and is completely locally owned and operated.
Finally, if you’re looking for a sweet treat, coffee, or smoothie, go to the Bold Goat. Joanie loved the cinnamon sweet tea and Jenni sucked down the salted caramel iced latte.
