Where To Stay Near Boone, North Carolina || Lazy Bear Lodge Bed and Breakfast in Vilas, North Carolina
On our way back to Florida from Pennsylvania this summer, we decided to stop off in Boone, North Carolina. It’s a college town, but we wanted to stay somewhere away from that scene. We searched the surrounding area and found Lazy Bear Lodge, which is a stunning lodge in the Blue Ridge Mountains just a short drive from Boone in Vilas.

Way up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina you’ll find an adorable lodge tucked away in its own slice of paradise.
Lazy Bed Lodge is a custom built five bedroom log cabin, specially designed to be the bed and breakfast of everyone’s dreams. Mark and Anne Winkelman, the original owners, made sure it met the standards of couples and families traveling and searching for the perfect bed and breakfast experience. The grounds are beautiful, and the lodge can be enjoyed during any season.
The front porch overlooks the front garden and koi pond. Then you walk into the modern yet rustic log cabin where you’re met with all of the amenities you need.
The main level has a great room, spa room, kitchen, a large dining room, and a wheelchair accessible bedroom. You also have access to games you can play with your family, and plenty of places to sit back and relax. There are windows surrounding you, so you’ll never miss the view.
The current owners of the lodge are John and Marsha Speer, and they purchased the lodge in 2017. Neither of them had backgrounds in hospitality, but they were passionate about travel and creating a stay for their guests that was both unique and memorable.
Their mission is to provide exceptional service to their guests from the time they make their reservation to when they check out. John and Marsha want their guests to have the best bed and breakfast experience at Lazy Bear Lodge, and they accomplish that by providing a comfortable stay and helping their guests create wonderful, lasting memories. They accomplish that in spades.
The second floor houses four guest bedrooms and a large landing where you can take in the views from the large back window.
Two of the second-floor rooms have private balconies with stunning views.
We stayed in The Wilds room, which has a king-size bed situated for a front forest view. It has an en-suite bathroom with a separate shower and jetted spa tub. There’s also a closet and sitting area in the bathroom.
The bedroom itself has an incredible gas fireplace that would be perfect in the fall or winter months. And you have access to the high speed WiFi, a large LED TV with a blu-ray player and DirecTV.
The other rooms on the second floor are just as spacious and are decorated with rustic bear touches.
On our first morning at Lazy Bear we enjoyed breakfast on the back veranda, which is definitely the prime spot. The views are absolutely stunning.
Weather permitting you can sit on the back veranda and do anything from read a book, get some work done, or just enjoy and take in that gorgeous view. We did that a few times during our stay. Even when the morning fog covers the Blue Ridge Mountains, the view is still breathtaking.
Although climbing the mountain felt a little treacherous, it was worth it a million times over when we took in that mountain air, and saw that incredible Blue Ridge view.
If you are going to be in the Boone area, then you need to check out Lazy Bear Lodge.
Thank you to John and Marsha for hosting us! We’ll definitely be back.
