Top Three Favorite Mediterranean Cities
The Mediterranean is one of the most stunning places to visit, and we had the chance to see it in all of its summer glory aboard the Viking Star in July 2019.
It was thirteen days of paradise on the Viking Mediterranean Odyssey itinerary. Here are our top three favorite cities on that cruise.
#3 - DUBROVNIK, CROATIA
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, then you probably know all about Dubrovnik, at least in its CGI form. We aren’t fans of the show, so we got to explore the city without any context of the creatures pictured in shop windows and on countless t-shirts.
We took a guided bus tour up the mountain to get a birds eye view of Dubrovnik, then we were dropped off in the crowded city center. After wandering around for a while, meandering down various streets, we stopped for lunch at an indoor/outdoor café and took a break from the crowds.
After lunch we braved the crowds through the city center and into the “castle” area of Dubrovnik. That’s when we discovered the magic. Around a corner there it was… THE WATER!
It was the bluest blue that we’ve ever seen and all we could do was stand there. The city had been so hot and just standing there letting the breeze whip water into our faces, we felt like we were in heaven.
It was magic.
#2 - CORFU, GREECE
Our first experience in Corfu was a beautiful bus ride up the mountain for an aerial view of the monastery and Mouse Island. It’s that iconic view of Corfu you’ll see if you do a Google search. Absolutely stunning!
After a stop for pictures and a little time to pet the stray cats, we were taken back down the mountain and dropped off for a city center tour. Being the naughty girls that we are, we split off from the tour group and explored on our own.
The word that comes to mind when thinking about Corfu is peaceful.
Every street is filled with people and shops, but somehow it still feels calm. We weren’t overwhelmed by crowds, even though they were all around us. It was remarkable.
And the people… the people were amazing! Some of the kindest and most genuine people we’ve met in our travels.
Joanie got some cute sunglasses from a local store and Jenni picked up a fun baseball cap. Most every shop takes credit cards, because Greece is trying desperately to rebuild their economy. So when you visit, buy a few souvenirs!
#1 - Venice, Italy
Venice is otherworldly.
The streets made of water.
The gondolas that take place of cars.
The water taxis.
It’s magical.
When we visited, we were talking about moving there for a year. That’s how much we loved it!
There are amazing art shops around every corner and lots of nooks and crannies to explore.
The only negative of Venice stems from part of its charm. The streets are narrow, which means the crowds build up quickly. If you’re claustrophobic, you may run into some problems during the busy seasons. However, for every packed street there is a beautifully calm and empty one around the corner.
